ポワロのハロウィン・パーティ

* はじめに
英語学習の目的は自分に興味がある推理小説。歴史、これは日本語では手にはいりにくいものが狙い。これらをたのしむ。これが私の目的である。悪口でないが英会話や時事英語には関心がない。そのやり方。

ユーチューブ上にあふれてる。これを教材に英語を聞きとる。そのために自然な英語をしゃべりたい。練習すれば、途中だが成果がでる。すでにブログで発表したギリシャの歴史がその一つ。次は推理小説。だからやってみた。

ここでアガサ・クリスティのハロウィーン・パーティを取りあげる。冒頭部分の書きおこしである。なお推理小説の「ネタばれ」に注意してるが、その恐れがあることをお断りしておく。

小説中のアガサ・クリスティのような女流作家、オリバー・アリアドネが登場。彼女が旅行中に知りあった女性の家庭に招待。ハロウィンの行事に参加する。まずここの登場人物は作家、女性、その娘である。

ものすごい早口である。ボイスレコーダーをひたすらきく。とにかく音をとり対応しそうな単語を当てはめる。あまりの難易度にもうやめようか、となったが、やる。私はこの作家の作品はほとんどもってる。それを参考にすればもうすこし楽だがズルはしない。音がとれるのに単語がうかばない場合は辞書でチェックした。後はひたすら音をとって書きおこした。

ボイスレコーダーでは一行ごとに繰りかえしの設定ができる。繰りかえしきき真似る。自分の発音を手本にかぶせられるようになる。するとこれが限界、自分の直感をしんじて書きおこした。これはハロウィンパーティの準備にかんする会話だ。なおHarrodsは英国の百貨店の名称。ロンドンといったからこうした。

登場人物がふえ、背景で飛びかう声もでる。音をとるのもむずかしい。

リンゴに魔除けの意味があること、ハロウィンの時期には魔物の魔力がもっともつよくなること、未来をおしえる鏡のわりにリンゴをうかべた水面がつかわれる。そこに女子が将来の夫の姿を見つけるらしいことなどである。大意はわかる。しかし、音がとれる。そこで単語をならべても、とても完全な文章とならない。文法的にもおかしところがある。何度きいても「the, that, it」などだろうがまったく音がとれないことも。呪文の部分で意味のある単語をあてられないことも。大意がとれたことだけで満足する。

事件の発端となる殺人がかたられる。悪霊、魔女、魔女役が登場し、舞台がととのう。

** 説明
少女、ジョイスがみたという殺人がかたられる。最後に魔女役にあわせ、みんながうたって物語の序幕がとじる。

* 感想
ものすごい早口の会話で聞きとれる音をつないで大意をつかむ。これがやっと出来たという感想である。後半にはいるともっとわかるようになる。だがどうしても聞きとれないのがのこるだろう。一応全部きいた。犯人もわかった。

これは過去の殺人事件が今回の殺人にからむ。この詳細をたどれなければ、謎解きの醍醐味を充分にあじわえない。今の私の実力では無理である。ところで名探偵ポワロのことである。

ポワロはベルギー生れ、フランス語をはなす。イギリスにうつり名探偵として活躍するが、その訛りがぬけない。特徴ある英語をはなす。実は日本人には聞きとりやすい。ついポワロにたよってしまう。今の私はおおいに彼にたすけてもらってる。
